EARLY SPRING
While deciduous trees and shrubs are still dormant, ( no leaves ) heavy pruning should be done. Anytime you want to reduce the size of a plant by more than one third, do it just prior to leafing out, or even earlier in late winter.
Clean off all dead leaves and stems from all perennials before or just as the new growth emerges. Some people find it more convenient to do this in the fall.
Remove protective wrap from trees.
After the ground thaws, and just before, or just as plants are starting to produce new growth, it is an excellent time to apply fertilizer
Roses should be pruned now.
Spirea should be pruned before they leaf out. Either remove all stems at ground level and allow the plant to produce all new stems, or prune it down to 10-12” above the ground and thin out about a fourth of the stems at ground level. I prefer the thinning method, because you will start spring with a little substance, but the plant will never look woody if you do it ever year.
