LATE SPRING
About the time the lilacs begin to bloom, apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as Preen to wood mulched areas. You may want to reapply the pre-emergent again in a couple months if weeds are especially troublesome.
Leaf tatter can often happen when warm spring winds tear new tender leaves. It is especially common in newer developments and with newly planted trees. There isn’t much you can do about this other than wait for more growth. Most of the time, the tree will recover. There are some companies specializing in treating everything with chemicals, and they often confuse leaf tatter or hail damage with insect damage. Every time you spray chemicals to kill a pest, beneficial insects may also be lost.
If you have lilac shrubs and want to shape them, the best time to do this is just after they finish blooming. Lilacs bloom on the previous years growth, so by pruning late spring, they will have time to produce new growth, and new flower buds for the next year.
